Customer Reviews:

Good product if you know how to setup wireless connection.4
Pros:
1. Support Wireless connection.
2. Good price $150 in staples if you have a printer to recycle.
3. Auto double sided printing. Save trees.
4. Auto doc feeder. Now I can scan/print when I go out for lunch.

Cons:
1. Setting up wireless connection by following the quick start guide is a huge mistake.

I tried this on a Vista machine. The machine can print for about 30 minutes, and it goes offline. The HP imaging device monitor cannot detect the device, and it refused to launch. After about 1 hour I realized the IP address of the machine was changed because I restarted everything.

To avoid the problem, the best way to setup the machine is:
1. Setup network connection from the machine menu, do not use the setup CD.
2. Once the machine is connected, go to the wireless router config menu, and reserve the IP address for the machine. Now the machine will always use the same IP address.
3. Install the printer driver. You can copy the setup CD to the harddrive to speed up the installation process.
4. Run setup.exe, select add a device->through the network. Your machine should be detected by the setup program, and you should be able glide from here.

Good luck!

One more thing, when you scan make sure the firewall does not block the communication between the machine and the scanning software.

Very Unstable Drivers on Vista2
So far I’ve had this printer almost two weeks, and I think I’ve finally figured out how to get it to stop crippling my system.

At first, the drivers on the CD caused my internet connection to drop every minute or so. I downloaded the latest drivers from the HP website and at first it appeared that things improved, but I discovered that the drivers caused my computer to hang after a short time and hose my system so bad it wouldn’t even shut down! On one occasion of turning my computer off without shutting down, it actually messed up my operating system and I had to rebuild my machine!

I can definitively trace the problem to the HP drivers because the problems occur only after installing the drivers, the problems disappear when the drivers are uninstalled, and even on a freshly built system I experience the same issues right after installing the HP drivers!

For those stuck in a similar rut, here’s the steps I’ve gone through after many hours of tinkering and talking with HP support to get things working (hopefully):

1. Download the latest drivers from the HP site. Version 4.42.0.0 seems to work okay.
2. Don’t install the “Smart Web Printing” components (they may hang IE).
3. Give your printer a static IP address through the controls on the physical printer (you can’t do it through the management software).
4. Disable the three HP-related services in services.msc.
5. DO NOT allow an automatic update installing the ~April 2008 Imaging Device Functions “critical patch” which will corrupt your system.

Other than the driver problems, the printer itself is fantastic. I’ve had printers hooked up to print servers before, but never an all-in-one that allowed printing, scanning AND fax-related activities over the network. The supporting software is also fantastic. Not only can you launch a scan from your network-connected computer, but you can designate that you want it in a searchable format (.pdf, .rtf, etc.) and the optical character recognition (OCR) software does a good job of recognizing text and sizing it appropriately (thus the scan is not just an image, but a document whose text you can cut/paste/etc.).

Also, apparently you have the ability to have received faxes save straight to your computer over the network instead of being printed out, the two-sided printing is better for the environment, as is the Energy Star rating which is a big plus in my book!

In short, the driver situation makes this purchase a sketchy one, at least for Vista owners, but the great features and capabilities of this printer have me hanging on instead of returning the printer hoping that HP will eventually resolve the problems.

UPDATE:
Actually, even with the above tweaks, I still exprienced problems with the drivers crashing my system (e.g. freezing after waking up from sleep mode). I even went so far as to downgrade from 64-bit to 32-bit, but my system is still dragged down by this piece of garbage and there’s no ETA on an updated driver which has sat unchanged for at least three months.

Sad. It’s a good product marred by awful drivers/software.

I’d take both stars away if I could.

SECOND UPDATE:
If you’re looking for a good WiFi printer, but own Vista, consider the Epson WorkForce 600 (which I’m now using successfully with Vista) or HP’s Officejet Wireless 6500, which is basically the “certified for Vista” version of the J6480.

Everything you need, nothing you don’t4
My old HP PSC950 “broke” after 7 years of light use so I researched most everything out there. I wanted an all-in-one that was wireless. Looked at HP’s, Canon’s and Epson’s offerings and read reviews. Found the HP J6480. Couldn’t find any reviews at the time but it was everything I was looking for. All-in-one features and wireless, obviously, AND it also uses only 2 ink cartridges. The document feeder and duplexer are nice. No color LCD which is fine by me. The footprint is a little deeper and a little wider than the 950 but it fit where I needed it to fit. Wireless setup is easy, if you don’t follow the directions in the manual. Please see Chong Yip’s review. I basically did the same thing. If someone else other than you configured your router’s security settings, you may want to find that someone to help.

If I had to make any complaints about the printer itself, there are 3. One is that it’s kinda loud when it starts up and when it prints, compared to my HP 6980. Two is that when faxing using the document feeder, if you’re faxing 2-sided sheets and have to put each side through to scan into memory, if you’re not fast enough the J6480 will start sending it off. Maybe it’s a setting but it would’ve been nice if it could ask if I was ready. I guess in an office environment, you would just leave it and have it take care of itself. Three is that the paper tray leaves much to be desired. While my old 950 and new 6980 have slide out paper “catchers” and a slot for 4×6 photo paper, the J6480 does not. The tray is angled up and fixed position so paper shouldn’t fall.

But in the end, these 3 complaints aren’t enough to knock my rating down. It was much simpler to setup wirelessly than the 6980 (I had to make a physical connection from my laptop to set that up and I’m a software engineer). The document feeder works well and is something I won’t be able to live without from now on (the 950 didn’t have one). It uses only 2 ink cartridges so their replacement should be cheaper than some other HP printers that use 6!! Automatic duplexing is a plus and non-expectant as this price. And last but not least, it’s easy on the eyes though I’m afraid the white will turn to light brown over time as do most plastics this color.

UPDATE
I was trying to fax using the flatbed rather than the sheet feeder and couldn’t for the life of me figure it out. I believe you can’t and that’s a real bummer. Sometimes I need to fax receipts and it’s not convenient to have to copy them in order to feed them into the sheet feeder to fax them. I am removing 1 star for this limitation.

From the Manufacturer

Customer Reviews:

Well worth the price5
Granted, I would never spend $59 to cover a $79 iPod Shuffle… but for any of the other iPods over $200, it’s a good deal… and here’s why.

Out of the box, you get a one year limited warranty. In the first 90 days of this out-of-the-box warranty, you can call Apple once for a general question – like “how do I speed up this track” or “tell me how in the hell to use this infernal gadget!” – but after that, it’s $49 per call… unless there is something technically wrong, then the call is free. It is a toll-free #.

The one year limited warranty is a 2-parter. In the first 6 months of this warranty (this is where reading the fine print really helps), you can contact AppleCare or go to an Apple Retail Store if your iPod is failing (not from accidental damage, though – just if it stops working or behaves badly) – if they cannot do a software fix for it, they will replace the iPod with a refurb unit. The refurbs have new cases and new batteries – but the LCD and Hard Drive might be refurbs. This is also in the fine print. The unit is still covered under your warranty for the life of the warranty period.

Your warranty period starts from the date of purchase of the iPod, not the date of purchase of the warranty. You have one year to buy the warranty and register it online. So, let’s say you are a last minute shopper and you fly to New York to shop at the Fifth Avenue Apple Store that is open 24/hrs a day, 365 days a year… and you buy the blooming iPod on Christmas day. You of course remember the date (like a birthday) in your memory… knowing you have one year to buy the warranty and register it… you will have until Christmas EVE the next year to buy & register the warranty online. You cannot buy it on the one-year anniversary – it’s one day too late – 366 days, not 365 days. Don’t procrastinate! By waiting, you do not add time to your coverage.

So – back to the limited warranty – after the first 6 months, there is a processing fee. This is waived if you have the AppleCare Protection Plan (APP), but if you just have the limited warranty, you’ll pay $29 plus tax for a replacement unit. Why? They ship the old unit back to be taken apart and recycled and it covers the shipping of the replacement unit to the store or to you (if you do the mail in service instead of going to the store).

When you get a replacement unit, the unit is covered for the length of your warranty or 90 days – whichever is longer.

When you have APP, there are no more fees – you have coverage for 2 solid years – unlimited phone support and no fees if you have to replace the unit in the store 20 times.

If you drop the unit, accidentally put it in the washing machine or run it over with your car, they will be able to tell and that kind of damage is not covered. If you have a warranty on your car, you use it if you hit a speedbump and your transmission falls out. But, if you wrap your car around a tree, this is an insurance issue, not a warranty issue. Same with the iPod. Apple does not sell insurance. Some credit cards do offer limited insurance on electronics. You will have to check w/ your card to see if this coverage is available for you.

Some people opt to do all their holiday shopping at a big-box retailer w/ their attractive 6-12 months no interest deals… that’s fine and dandy – but you need to be aware of some of the extended warranties they sell. Ask lots of questions.

Many big-box retailers offer a 4-year warranty for about the same price as Apple’s 2 year warranty – but what is in the tiny print is that in the first year, you have to take the unit to Apple for service. So – you take it into Apple (or mail it in) – they don’t ‘repair’ your unit – they either do a software fix if it was corrupted software (something you can do yourself at home) or they will replace the unit. When they replace the unit, you now have a new serial number – and this is not covered by the other retailer’s 4-year warranty. You won’t know this until 2 years later your ipod dies again – you go to the big box retailer and they tell you that the iPod you have in your hand is not the one you covered with their warranty. Oops!

With your APP warranty, you’re paying 8 cents a day for peace of mind. And if you’re buying a $400 iPod, it’s nice that you don’t have to worry about getting another one for 2 years. It’s a hefty investment only to have to pay $30 for a replacement in 6 months if the thing starts acting funny, then paying for a new one. By the time your APP runs out, you know they will have come out w/ some new awesome model you ‘have to have’ anyway. I still have the first iPod I bought about 5 years ago and it still works. The battery life is nil, but plugged in, it still works… but I still bought a new model when it came out… and you will too.

Worth every penny!!5
I got a 30gb iPod about 23 months ago in trade for some work I did for an acquaintance. At the time I didn’t even know about the protection plan. It wasn’t until I realized how much I loved this little electronic wonder that I started to worry about how I would ever replace it if it stopped working.

About 11 months after I received the iPod I purchased the protection plan from Apple. The sales rep I spoke with was well informed and very helpful. I had actually purchased the plan 11 months and 30 days after my initial iPod purchase date. I was assured that as long as I bought the plan before the original warranty expired that I could register it to my iPod at any time. She was right.

When my iPod started losing charge and shutting down intermittently about a month ago I was worried but then I remembered the protection plan. I called them up and they had the shipping materials at my door the next day. I sent the iPod out the day after and after 1 day of transit, 1 day of troubleshooting, and 1 day of return shipping I have a newly refurbished iPod back in my hands. No questions, no runaround, no hassle.

I would recommend this product to ANYONE with an iPod. These things are just too damn cool to risk losing.

Good protection but not truely 2 years!4
Two things to note. Yes, you get two years but not if you bought the iPod from Amazon. According to Apple, they base the warranty date on when Apple sold it to Amazon as the purchase date. So if Amazon got it on Dec 14, 2008 and you did not buy it until February 14, 2009, your two years began on Dec 14 but you would be good until Dec 14, 2010 when purchasing the APP.

Another thing. Do you live in North Carolina? If so, forget trying to register the warranty online. It won’t let you. This is because Apple has a different warranty service for North Carolina residents. You must call 1-800-APL-CARE and perform a voice registration. I bought four warranties from Apple for the two Nano 4G’s and two Touch 2G’s that I bought from Amazon. Though I only lost a few days warranty on three of them due to high Christmas demand, I did lose 4 weeks on my 16GB Touch because it was sitting on the shelf at Amazon.

Acer Laptop5
Excellent laptop and love the numeric keypad, you will too if your field involves a lot of calculations, it’s perfect. Fast shipping and came as described. It’s fast, light and hasn’t frozen once! I also have a Dell XPS and I have found that the acer is more efficient and more fun to use. The camera is also very clear. A great buy and one I would recommend to anyone!

Felicia’s ratings5
This is a very good product. It has a very clean and clear screen and very easy to understand. I WOULD DEFINITELY RECOMMEND THIS PRODUCT.

Working Great So Far4
I’ve had mine for about a week now, and I’m really enjoying it. I have used it as a full-on laptop and I have also used it connected to my wireless keyboard/mouse and larger monitor. The screen quality is great both on the laptop screen and when I plugged in a larger desktop monitor. Windows 7 is nice and so far it runs pretty fast.

The blue color is very dark/subtle (more so than it looks in the pictures here), so if you want a really BLUE one, this might not be it, but if you’re not sure you want a blue one, it looks black most of the time anyway.

I don’t find the speaker quality to be very good at all. It’s loud but kind of unbalanced (tinny, maybe) to my ears. It sounds great with headphones or my external speakers, though.

Built-in keyboard and mouse are fine, and I do appreciate having the number pad – can’t live without that.

I’m not a gamer and I haven’t done anything really intensive with this yet, but so far I’m very pleased.

Great Sounding, Comfortable and Affordable Headset5
I am truly impressed with this headset. It fits the head snugly and not too tight. It has a reasonable weight, not too heavy and the adjustable mic (for length) works very well. I can’t comment on how I sound :-) but the good clarity of the mic during internet telephony was commented on. The headphones sound quite good, large 40mm drivers do bring out the bass very well. The mids and highs are all clean, without distortion.

The unit is constructed of good quality plastic with the mic on a swivel joint on the left earpiece. The swivelling joint is stiff and has not yet become loose :-) . Time will tell though. The padded earpieces are covered with a nice airy cloth material, and it is very comfortable when worh for long durations. The headband is fairly easy to adjust and once adjusted doesn’t slip.

All in all this a really nice headset. I use mine for internet telephony and it works a charm. Constructed well, sounds excellent, good adjustability with volume control and mic mute on the cord. There is also a neat little lapel clip if you need to secure the cord and (controls) in place. A good buy … get one.

Great Gaming Headset, Slight FLAW4

This headset has everything the more [$$$] version has but a whole lot cheaper. I will state the pros and cons.

PROS:
1: Great Sound
2: Mic is better than average
3. Light Weight

CONS:
1. Might hurt ears if worn for a long time.
2. The end of the wire, are two wires that are joined (will explain)

Here is where the Slight Flaw comes from, the end of the wire has two leads, mic and sound. It is both connected and cannot be separated. The problem is for people who has speakers and an earphone out. It cannot be possible to plug the ear connector to the speakers and connect mic to the back of the comp. Its a slight prob but if you have a front panel with both sound and mic then you’ll be fine.

Good sound but very poor build quality1
I bought this after doing much research for a headset to use on my computer with occasional voice-to-text use. The mic works really well (great for voice applications), although the moveable boom is more marketing hype as it only moves 1 inch with little effect. It is bendable which is good. Audio quality for games and music is very good. Bass response is also surprisingly sufficient. It can output very loud music/sounds without distortion, much better than smaller headsets or earplugs.

If you wear it for longer periods 1 hour+ you may find it hurts your ears.

Also rebranded along the lines of Plantronics GAMECOM Digital Stereo PC Gaming Headset. Identical to the Audio .90 except for some extra printing and different packaging to compete with similar products from Logitech and others.

Volume control works, but isn’t very good quality as at max volume you may hear some noise during adjustment. There is also a built in mic mute switch which shows a red sticker when the mic off.

There is also a small clip on the cable which you can adjust to clip to your shirt which keeps the volume control close to you or the cable away from your feet. I haven’t really had a need to use it, but it does work.

The plugs are gold plated and have colour coded rings for easy identification.

BUT it is POOR QUALITY – the cable is long (great feature) but fairly thin. Cables on my previous cheapie US$10 Logitech headset were much better quality. After 3 months i noticed the left channel occasionally dropped out, then it permanently stopped working. I took it back to the shop and they took 3 weeks to get it replaced. Now 15 months later the left channel has stopped working agin!

Now this seems like a trend :( I did some research with Google and i’ve seen stories of other Plantronics products having the same problem. When i jiggle the wire between the headset and the volume control the sound comes on and off. The weirdest thing is that the cable comes in the left speaker then gets routed to the right speaker via the headband. But the right channel works fine and the left does not.
So I opened it up and found that they use a very small PCB to solder the wires together which is the weak spot. I ripped off all the wires, soldered the tips, twisted them together and resoldered them, such a waste of time but now it works again although the cover doesn’t close properly.

Also interesting that the warranty is only for 12 months. I’m unimpressed at paying US$50 for something of such poor manufacturing quality compared to $10 headphones which last much longer (the foam ear bits wore off my old Logitech after 3 years but it still worked fine).

Recommend you try something else unless you’re OK with replacing it after a year. I’ve seen it on sale as low as US$18! Open air-headphones are also great but leak much more sound to those around you than closed headphones.
